The evacuation of Přívoz, the district through which the flooded Odra flows, began on Monday after 9 a.m. “The reason for the evacuation is the flooding of the town,” reports Kamila Langerová, the press spokesperson of the Moravian-Silesian fire department.

Human dwellings and the urban area are threatened by water. “The evacuation has nothing to do with chemical plants,” assured Langer. Already on Sunday, residents in Přívoz were urged to park their cars and prepare for the fact that in connection with the rising level of the Odra and the flood wave, adjacent parts of the district may be flooded.

“Unfortunately, the water started rising in the Přívoz district at night. The situation became dramatic. In the area from the bed of the Odra River on the right to the railway line along Mariánskohorská Street, water began to flow heavily. We have aerial images that show that at the confluence of the Opava and Odra rivers, there are two defects in the embankment, approximately fifty meters long, in the right part of the Odra river. This leads to a new flow, not completely negligible, so we have to react and evacuate,” explained the director of the fire department of the Moravian-Silesian Region, Radim Kuchař.

By half past eleven, seven dozen people, including children, were evacuated in the first and most acute wave. The evacuees were taken to the evacuation center at Černá louka in Ostrava.
