This Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day, and several registration events are taking place in the lead-up to the presidential election.
In fact, there is a naturalization ceremony in Chicago on this very day in which 125 people from 41 different countries will be sworn in as new American citizens and, therefore, will have the right to vote.
That’s why both Cook County and the City of Chicago are holding different events to register new voters. They’ve been at Daley Plaza downtown registering new voters since early in the morning.
According to the Chicago Board of Elections, new voter registrations have increased since June 1. To date, they have registered about 37,000 new voters.
“We are looking to encourage all voters and all people who are not registered to vote to register to vote and anyone who does not know if their registration is up to date to contact us to find out if their registration is active, if they need to make changes to their address, their name, anything,” said Giovanna Carrillo, of the Chicago Board of Elections.
Requirements to register to vote
- Be a US citizen
- Turn 18 years old on or before the date of the general election, which is November 5, 2024
