Arévalo confirms determination for the well-being of the people of Guatemala – 2024-09-18 09:11:15

Guatemala City/Prensa Latina

President Bernardo Arévalo today reaffirmed his government’s determination to guarantee the well-being of all the people of Guatemala and to overcome challenges, even in the most difficult times.

During the ceremony to hand over prefabricated modules for the continuity of school services in the municipality of San Pedro Carchá, in the department of Alta Verapaz, the president recalled the weather conditions of last June and July.

They severely affected many of our infrastructures and put at risk two fundamental pillars of society, education and health, the Head of State stressed.

However, he added, as a government we are responding with timely action, since the modules project reflects the clear demonstration that we can overcome challenges even in the most critical moments, he stressed.

These prefabricated structures – explained Arévalo – ensure that the facilities, in this case educational, can adapt to the immediate needs of the communities impacted by the rains.

They guarantee – he added – safety for students, protection for the entire school sector and confidence and peace of mind for parents, who know that their children will be able to continue studying despite the rain.

He announced the delivery of modules in other communities and the inauguration of three health posts in the department itself, “we are really responding immediately to the effects of the rains we had a couple of months ago,” he emphasized.

The standard-bearer of the Movimiento Semilla party stressed that the idea was possible thanks to the correct management of the resources allocated under the state of calamity and every cent invested is destined for a clear purpose.

“Transparency and efficiency in the use of resources are the commitment of this project,” he said, while warning about the response to emergencies and the urgent need to work towards prevention.

We know that heavy rains and extreme weather events are not isolated events in a country like Guatemala, they are part of our reality, said the 65-year-old politician.

This government is therefore committed not only to repairing the damage they cause, but also to developing and implementing mitigation policies and measures, he said.

We cannot stop the rains, but we can reduce their impact and we will do so as we are doing today, promised the president of this Central American territory.

He acknowledged the Ministries of Communications and Education, as well as those who participated in this effort.

He insisted that, thanks to Congress, they now have an expanded budget that allows them to bring more work to the population.

The president finally stated that he will continue working with education, responsibility and a vision for the future.
