Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the assumption of the Sustainable Transport and Tourism portfolio at the Commission by Apostolos Tzitzikostas as a great success for our country.

In particular, Mr. Mitsotakis in his post mentions, among other things, that the portfolio also highlights the geopolitical importance of Greece and its strategic position, as a gateway country, for trade, energy and networking, both towards the Western Balkans and the Eastern Europe, as well as the northeastern tip of the Mediterranean.

I want to express today my great satisfaction for the portfolio of Sustainable Transport and Tourism, for which Apostolos Tzitzikostas has been chosen in the new European Commission.

Let me tell you some things you don’t know:

Firstly, the title alone, which includes Tourism, is a great success of our country. We succeeded and convinced the European Commission that Tourism deserves its own place in European policies. And its space is Greek, as Greece is a pioneer in sustainable tourism development and can contribute with proposals and initiatives in the direction of sustainable tourism and infrastructure improvement.

The portfolio also highlights the geopolitical importance of Greece and its strategic position as a gateway country for trade, energy and networking, both to the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe, and as the north-eastern tip of the Mediterranean.

It reflects the upgrading of our country’s position and its important role in connectivity and transport, especially towards the wider Balkans, a region that still requires the strengthening of its infrastructure, from which our country will benefit, gaining a seamless connection with Central Europe , the Baltic and the Black Sea.
In this way, the pivotal position of Greece in the transport and energy routes to and from Europe is strengthened, as well as the role as a bridge with the Middle East and North Africa.

The Greece portfolio handles important projects and EU resources, such as the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the EU’s financial tool. for strategic investments in transport networks, energy and digital. This is the “ESPA of networks”. Indicative of its importance is the fact that during the period 2021-2027 it handles resources of the order of 26 billion euros for the transport sector exclusively.

Mobility and connectivity cannot be understood without maritime transport. The responsibilities of the portfolio include the shipping sector, which is of key importance for Greece, which is a world power in shipping.
