Detroit beats Rams in overtime

Detroit. A 1-yard touchdown run by David Montgomery in overtime gave the Detroit Lions a 26-20 victory over the Matthew Stafford-led Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night in a rematch of the NFC wild-card game.

The Lions blew a two-score lead in the third quarter but took the game into overtime with Jake Bates’ 32-yard field goal to tie the score in the final minute of regulation.

Detroit won the toss and took advantage of getting the ball first, gaining at least 9 yards on its first four plays in overtime to set up Montgomery’s score.

The Rams were in position to spoil Detroit’s homecoming celebration when Stafford threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp with 4:30 left in the fourth quarter.

They just couldn’t make enough plays on both sides of the ball to hold on to the win.

The Los Angeles team fought back despite losing catcher Puka Nacua, who was selected to the All-Star Game last year, and suffering losses in its offensive line.

The Lions led 17-3 in the third quarter after Jared Goff threw a 52-yard pass to Jameson Williams. They lost their cushion because their former star quarterback tore them apart with his passing game and their current quarterback suffered an interception early in the fourth quarter.
