Latin America and the Caribbean prepares with a regional consultation to promote global educational progress

On September 9 and 10, 2024,from we held a Regional Consultation for Latin America and the Caribbean in preparation for the Global Education Meeting 2024 (Global Education Meeting – GEM)with the participation of 25 ministries of education and nine regional organizations. This event took placefrom in hybrid form from from the UNESCO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (in Santiago, Chile), in his role as technical secretary of the Regional Steering Committee, to identify key strategies to comply with the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4)with a focus on ensuring inclusive, equitable and quality education for all.

The regional consultation is part of a global process that will end with the adoption of the Fortaleza Declaration, which will be the final document of GEM 2024, which will be held in Fortaleza, Brazil, on October 30 and November 1. This text will reflect the contributions of various regional consultations, including contributions from multiple actors. from all over the world.

The the director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, Esther Kuisch Larochethe importance of this consultation process, saying that “education is the basic pillar to build fair, just and sustainable societies. opportunity to share your experience, your challenges and your solutions on the way to achieving SDG 4. world.”

The regional consultation focused on Latin America and the Caribbeanfrom in the advances and recommendations developed by the Regional Reference Framework on public policies for educational reactivation, recovery and transformation and the preliminary proposal on inclusive and effective funding. Both initiatives were developed in collaboration with ministries of education, intergovernmental organizations, civil society representatives, teachers, students and multilateral development banks.

“As a country, we are very proud to host this valuable consultation, highlighting the commitment expressed by our president from his role as co-chair of the SDG 4 High Level Steering Committee .The Ministry of Education 2024 entrusted the Regional Steering Committee. to develop two main proposals: a public policy framework for the revitalization of education and a preliminary proposal for inclusive funding. adolescents in the region and in the world,” said Alejandra Arratia, Chile’s Undersecretary of Education.

For his part, Paula Alves de Souza, ambassador and permanent representative of Brazil to UNESCOhe said “as a member of the High Steering Committee for SDG 4, Brazil has called for an integrated vision of education with all the goals of the 2030 Agenda Education is essential to change lives, but it is not seen in its isolated. It must move forward hand in hand with other dimensions of social development, such as decent work, security, human rights, food and health.”

During the two days of consultation, participants addressed essential issues for future education in the areaSuch as: the transformative power of education, the actions needed to accelerate progress towards SDG 4he climate change, peace, gender equality, education funding and equity.
