2nd matchday of the Handball Bundesliga: Magdeburg without problems in Hamburg

Status: 15.09.2024 19:47

SC Magdeburg celebrated its second win in two games in the Handball Bundesliga and delivered a fitting response to the disappointment in the Champions League.

Three days after the bitter 29:31 defeat at the start of the Champions League against Hungary’s runner-up Pick Szeged, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team won comfortably 32:26 (16:10) against HSV Handball. With nine goals, veteran Matthias Musche was the best scorer for the triple winner, who had defeated HSG Wetzlar 35:28 in the opening match.

“The win was incredibly important. It’s good to start the season with four points,” said SCM backcourt player Gisli Kristjansson on the “Dyn” microphone. Next Sunday (September 22, 2024), the Magdeburg record champions will host THW Kiel in the first top game of the season.

Golla praises Flensburg’s “focused performance”

European League winners SG Flensburg-Handewitt also completed their task. Flensburg celebrated their second landslide victory of the young season with a 39:25 (21:8) win over TVB Stuttgart and defended their lead in the table with 4:0 points thanks to the best goal difference. “It was a concentrated performance, especially in the first half,” said center Johannes Golla.

Füchse Berlin win in Leipzig thanks to Gidsel

The Füchse Berlin had to put up significantly more resistance than Magdeburg and Flensburg in their 37:32 (20:17) defeat against SC DHfK Leipzig. As is often the case, world handball player Mathias Gidsel was the best scorer for the capital club with eight goals, which, like Magdeburg, had started the group phase of the Champions League with a narrow defeat.

In addition to Gidsel, U21 world champion Tim Freihöfer once again impressed as an accurate finisher. The left winger scored seven times.

Lions win southwest duel

The Rhein-Neckar Löwen also confidently secured their second win in the second game. In the southwest duel with promoted team SG BBM Bietigheim, the team around playmaker Juri Knorr gave the newcomer no chance, winning 33:25 (19:11), especially in the first round. Ivan Martinovic impressed the favorites from Mannheim with eleven goals. National player Knorr, who will move to the Danish top club Aalborg next summer, also impressed with eight goals. For Bietigheim, however, which is relying on former national player Julius Kühn in the backcourt for its return to the Bundesliga, it was the first defeat. The team had won the duel between the promoted teams against 1. VfL Potsdam (28:26) at the start.

Kiel celebrates clear success

Record champion THW Kiel celebrated a successful home debut in the new Bundesliga season despite major personnel problems. The Kiel team defeated FA Göppingen 33:24 (17:11) on Thursday evening and showed that they had recovered well from their 27:32 defeat on the first match day at the hands of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen in front of their home crowd.

Despite the absence of backcourt players Karl Wallinius, Nikola Bilyk and Elias Ellefsen á Skipagötu, the “Zebras” showed an excellent performance in positional attack. New signing Emil Madsen in particular was in top form. The shooter was Kiel’s most successful shooter with nine goals. In addition to the Dane, goalkeeper Andreas Wolff stood out in his comeback at the Ostseehalle. The national goalkeeper, who returned to the THW from Poland, saved eleven shots.

Eisenach scores points in the fight to avoid relegation

On Friday, ThSV Eisenach won 28:24 (14:12) against HC Erlangen, which remains without a point. The Thuringians, on the other hand, took their first win in the fight to avoid relegation. Moritz Ende was Eisenach’s best scorer with seven goals in seven attempts.

Melsungen beats newcomer Potsdam

Newly promoted VfL Potsdam lost its first away game. Coach Emir Kurtagic’s team lost 23:31 (10:18) at MT Melsungen. The best VfL scorers in front of 2,639 spectators in the Rothenbach Hall in Kassel were Josip Simic (6 goals), Nils Fuhrmann (5/2) and Jannek Klein (4).
