Dominican documentary about Poniatowska awarded in Madrid

Santo Domingo. “Carta Malva, Poniatowska and Dominicana conversan”, directed by Dominican Angélica Noboa Pagán, was awarded “Best Foreign Language Documentary” at the Madrid Film Festival, local media reported today.

Cinedominicano.com reported that the awards ceremony took place at the Marriott Conference Center and Auditorium Hotel.

Filmed between 2020 and 2022 in Santo Domingo and Mexico City, the film was first presented at the Cineteca Nacional de México in February 2023, in the presence of renowned Mexican writer and journalist Elena Poniatowska, her family, the documentary’s director, and other special guests.

The film, produced by Poncho Morado Films, in addition to winning the award in the Best Documentary category, was nominated in three other categories: Best Film of the Festival, Best Director for Angélica Noboa Pagán, and Best Editing by Ian Felipe Rodríguez.

The film pays tribute to Poniatowska’s work and, according to its director, is an invitation to explore the world of reading, creative writing and other artistic forms that promote closeness between people, evoking times gone by when letters were the main means of communication.

It has been revealed that the Poncho Morado Films team is working on its next project, a feature film titled “Mi Pedro,” which will address the life and legacy of Dominican intellectual Pedro Henríquez Ureña, highlighting his influence on the Spanish language and his relationship with figures such as Alfonso Reyes and José Vasconcelos during his stay in Mexico.

At 92, Poniatowska remains one of the most important figures in Mexican literature and culture.

She is recognized for works such as The Night of Tlatelolco: Testimonies of Oral History (1971), Until I See You, My Jesus (1969) and Nothing, No One: The Voices of the Tremor (1988).
