The most important flood indicator for the Danube in Vienna is the Korneuburg measuring station. This shows 6.02 meters on Saturday evening. This opens the inlet structure to the New Danube relief channel, so that the water also flows via the New Danube.
VIENNA. What experts predicted to MeinBezirk with “fair probability” happened early on Saturday evening. At the Korneuburg measuring point, probably the most important flood indicator for the Danube in Vienna – this is where the inlet structure for the New Danube relief channel is located – the limit of six meters was reached. It is 6.02 meters as of 7 p.m. This means that there is a flow into the New Danube. At 11 a.m. the value was 0 m³/s, i.e. no flow, but now – as of 6.50 p.m. – 220 m³/s of water are flowing in through the system.
From six meters, the inlet structure opens bit by bit so that the current also flows via the New Danube. A sophisticated back-up system that protects Vienna from flooding. You can read the full explanation of how this works here:

An example of the water level of the Vienna River near the Kennedy Bridge shows what the situation looks like. The water level here is usually around 15 cm.
On Friday evening, at 9 p.m., it was 71 cm. At 7 p.m. on Saturday, it was 123 cm. See graphic:
It has rained a lot in Vienna since Thursday. An example: The Mariabrunn measuring station in Vienna shows 105 Liter/m² since Thursday, here it rains 80 litres/m² in the whole of September. The wind was also very strong: At the Jubiläumswarte a new September record was set with 104 km/h measured.
