Prof. Zbigniew Lew-Starowicz, a renowned sexologist, psychiatrist and psychotherapist, has died

Prof. Dr. Hab. N. Med. Zbigniew Lew-Starowicz, an outstanding Polish sexologist, psychiatrist and psychotherapist, promoter of sexual education, has died. He was 80 years old.

The death of Prof. Zbigniew Lew-Starowicz was announced on Friday on social media by his family and the team of the Lew-Starowicz Therapy Center.

“He was not only an expert in his field, but also a teacher and mentor for many generations, and his scientific work had a huge impact on the development of sexology in Poland,” the Lew-Starowicz Therapy Center said in a Facebook post. As noted, “he will forever remain in our memories and hearts, as a person deeply committed to his work and always willing to help those in need.”

Lew-Starowicz was born on October 25, 1943. In 1966 he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy in Łódź. In 1986 he obtained a postdoctoral degree in medical sciences, specializing in psychiatry.

In 1995–1996 he was an expert of the Ministry of National Education in the field of sexual education, and in 1996–1998 a leader of the United Nations sexual education program. In 1994 he was appointed national specialist in the field of sexology.

He was the author and co-author of several hundred publications in the field of sexology and psychiatry and several thousand popular science articles.

He was awarded the Knight’s Cross, the Officer’s Cross and the Order of Polonia Restituta.
