Los Angeles. An earthquake shook the Los Angeles area Thursday morning, sending rocks crashing onto a street, shaking a pier and awakening residents. No casualties or damage have been reported.
The quake sent rocks crashing onto a Malibu road and shook the wooden Santa Monica Pier, which dates back to 1909.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 and was centered four miles (seven kilometers) north of Malibu with a depth of about seven miles (11 kilometers).
The quake was felt as far away as 42 miles (72 kilometers) away in Orange County, where residents reported objects moving in their homes.
Local authorities said they were inspecting the area but had not detected any significant damage.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lt. Adam Zeko said the quake shook the area and lasted about 15 to 20 seconds.
“We are still inspecting critical infrastructure,” said Zeko, whose station covers the area around Malibu and Westlake Village. “So far we haven’t found anything of significance.”
A video camera captured the moment the Santa Monica Pier, about 12 miles (19 kilometers) from Malibu, shook.
Workers are clearing away massive boulders that fell onto Malibu Canyon Road near the epicenter of the quake, KTLA-TV reported.
Malibu Councilman Bruce Silverstein said he has lived in the community for 13 months and that this was the strongest quake he had ever felt, but nothing was broken.
“Our house shook for like two or three seconds. I was afraid the windows were going to blow out,” Silverstein said.
Rene Vasquez, manager of The Country Kitchen restaurant in Malibu, said the shaking lasted a few minutes and the kitchen staff went outside as a precaution, but there was no damage.
“It wasn’t that bad,” Vasquez said. “Thank God nothing fell.”
On social media, several people – including celebrities – said they were woken up by the tremor.
Paris Hilton wrote on X: “That #earthquake scared me.”
Khloe Kardashian wrote: “Gosh that was a big one.”
The quake comes as the region is reeling from three massive wildfires east of Los Angeles that have burned dozens of homes and forced the evacuation of thousands of people. The fires are occurring amid a stifling heat wave that is only just beginning to subside.
