Brazil was last night battling to contain tens of thousands of wildfires fueled by the country’s worst drought on record, with major cities such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro under threat.

“The federal government, in collaboration with state governments and municipal authorities, is working to deal with the fires,” President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva wrote on the social media site Bluesky, which was created after the X platform was banned in Brazil.
The number of fires increased in the first 12 days of September compared to the corresponding period in 2023, with 49,266 outbreaks compared to 46,486, according to data from the National Institute of Space Research (INPE) based on satellite data.

As of midnight Thursday, 60.7% of the fires recorded in September in South America were burning in Brazil, according to the same source.
Many of the outbreaks are recorded in areas important for their biodiversity, such as that of the Amazon and the Pantanal. The fires have also reached cities such as Sao Paulo which yesterday saw flames approaching its northern suburbs.
