Olympic champion and world record holder in weightlifting Carlos Nassar announced that he may end his career as a weightlifter if he does not compete for Bulgaria.
“I am Bulgarian production. I will not sell myself and compete for another country, no matter how much money they give me abroad and no matter how many scandals there are in our federation. There are many problems and I don’t know how it will be in the future. Her license could be revoked. If I don’t have the conditions to compete for Bulgaria, I will end my career,” said Nassar on the “Championship Games” podcast of “Masters of the Air”.
“Things are getting worse in the Federation. They lie that they have solutions, but only say what people want to hear. They’re hoping, maybe beside me, that something will happen, but they’ve proven over the years that they can’t. The first step is to remove the current leadership and form a new one. The license is about to be taken because of the serious obligations to the state, which under Anton Kojabashev are only growing. This can result in weightlifters being suspended from competition. We have not received any money from the federation in the form of salaries since December. The ministry showed support and made targeted projects for the money to go through the clubs and before Paris they transferred four salaries to us, but not from the federation,” the weightlifter added.
“The Olympic prize is BGN 250,000 and that is not a small amount of money. I’m not doing this for the money anyway. They will allow me to lead a dignified life and give me security over the years. They are absolutely enough for me. My motivation is to repeat the Olympic title. That’s my first goal, then I’ll be chasing a third and a fourth. You have to be obsessed with the sport, and when you want to be the best, that’s what separates the good from the great athletes. So far I’d say I’m just good. There is no four-time Olympic weightlifting champion in the world, and I think I can achieve it, but life is full of twists and turns,” announced the Olympic champion.
