“Too risky”: Linz Triathlon cancelled | Nachrichten.at

You are powerless against the weather. Even though the organizing association TriRun Linz was optimistic in the middle of this week that the traditional event with start and finish at Pleschingersee could take place, it has now come to an end.

“We have to cancel the triathlon on Sunday,” said Peter Weinzierl’s team. “It is simply too risky because of the flood situation and the threat of fire service operations.” Prior to this, consultations were held with the local fire brigade and the police. The result: holding the event would be a great risk for the athletes as well as for the organizers.

The route runs through Luftenberg and Abwinden, two very badly affected areas near small rivers and the Danube. That’s why I’ve decided to cancel the triathlon. That’s annoying, but in terms of a fair and safe event it’s the smartest solution, Weinzierl continued.

A generous solution for athletes

The organizer announced that there would be a generous solution for the starting places for the athletes who would have started in Linz on Sunday. Transferring the competition to next year’s event, which is scheduled for September 14, 2025, would not be a problem at all. The starters would receive the relevant information by email in the next few days.

At the Linz Triathlon, the athletes would have competed in the sprint distance and the Olympic distance. An aqua bike competition was also planned. That will now only happen next year, provided the weather plays along.
