Germany: Controversy over immigration policy deepens – Feser’s letter to the Commission on border closure – 2024-09-13 21:18:51

After the failure of the government-opposition summit on curbing irregular immigration, the issue once again emerged as a focal point in the speeches of Chancellor Olaf Solz and the leader of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) Friedrich Merz, who in the context of the debate on budget in the Federal Parliament exchanged fire in unusually high tones.

“You can’t do it, that’s the truth (…) You are just words and accomplish nothing. The Christian Democratic interior ministers did not understand anything,” Mr Solz told the opposition, referring to the interior ministers of previous governments who came from the CDU and the Christian Social Union (CSU). The chancellor listed his own government’s immigration decisions, talking about tougher asylum rules, introducing border controls, reducing benefits for asylum seekers, expanding the list of safe countries of origin and deporting Afghans. “We did all this. You are the ones who are not getting anything done,” Olaf Solz said in a pointed tone and, with an eye on Tuesday’s CDU withdrawal from immigration talks, accused Friedrich Merz of “theatrics.” “Citizens do not want theatrical performances. I’m happy to spell the word ‘serious’ for you,” the chancellor said, stressing at the same time that “the door is open and you can always come back” to the talks. The attack on Friedrich Merz had already begun earlier, with Olaf Scholz, speaking to citizens, declaring that “leadership requires character, honesty and stability” and accusing his opponent of “pettiness”, “provincial troupe acting” and a lack of team spirit. spirit.

“We are a country that provides protection to those who have to run for safety. This is written in our Constitution and is not up for debate. So cosmopolitanism is necessary, but that does not mean that anyone who wants to can come. We must be able to choose who comes to Germany. This includes controlling immigration and repatriating those who cannot stay,” the chancellor continued and emphasized that “there is no country in the world with a shrinking workforce that is experiencing economic growth.”

Referring to the recent elections in Saxony and Thuringia, Olaf Solz spoke of “depressing” results, which “we will never get used to”. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) “is bad for our country (…) We will do everything in order for this party to lose its importance again”, he said.

The chancellor concluded his speech with a reference to Ukraine, assuring that “we will support it unconditionally until the end”, while again calling for a new peace conference “with Russia at the table”. Russia’s attempt to move the border “constitutes a violation of the security and peace order, but Germany will also do everything to ensure that peace is always explored. And now is the time for it,” he explained.

Friedrich Merz, for his part, began his speech by assuring that his party wants Germany to “remain an open and friendly country to foreigners.” Without people with a migrant background, many of whom work in care, education or catering, the country “cannot function successfully for a single day”, he continued, and acknowledged that “we may even need more” in the coming years. The Union, he emphasized, stands “clearly and clearly against any form of xenophobia”.

At the same time, the CDU leader underlined, the number of those arriving irregularly in Germany is very high, while there is also “a small minority, especially young men, who do not want to abide by the rules of cohabitation and we should talk about them”. .

Referring to talks with the government on changes to policy to curb irregular immigration, Mr Merz insisted that no change to the constitution was needed and rejected Olaf Solz’s accusations of “theatrics” and a pre-planned CDU exit from the talks, also making it clear that does not intend to continue the dialogue. “We will not enter into an endless cycle of talks with you,” he noted and reiterated that a key demand of his party remains the ability to reject migrants at the border. He even described the proposals submitted by the government on the matter as “inadequate”. “We did not leave for reasons of tactics, but of substance,” he asserted.

Friedrich Merz again accused the Chancellor of his position in favor of organizing a peace conference for Ukraine with the participation of Russia. “We will never get used to war in Ukraine. It is a violent war of aggression that violates international law with the most serious daily war crimes against an innocent country and an innocent civilian population. It remains our duty to stand by Ukraine. With rhetoric of peace we will never force Putin to give up,” stressed Friedrich Merz.

In the same debate in the Bundestag, AfD parliamentary group leader Alice Weidel called Olaf Solz a “chancellor of decline” and blamed the SPD and the federal government for the deindustrialization and destruction of wealth in Saxony and Thuringia. Referring to immigration, Ms Weidel argued that the government was “sabotaging deportations”, calling it “kindergarten” and called for an immediate suspension of immigration for at least five years. “What are you waiting for? Finally deport these criminals!”, she characteristically addressed Olaf Solz.

Letter to the Commission

At the same time, the Minister of the Interior, Nancy Feser, in her letter to the Commission in which she informs about the decision of Berlin to reintroduce controls along the border, speaks of a “continuing alarming situation” at the German border and of an “unacceptably high” number of irregular entries in the country. The letter refers to a “dramatic deterioration in citizens’ sense of security” following recent violent crimes and describes the Dublin Process as “increasingly dysfunctional”.

Federal resources are “almost exhausted,” Ms. Feser wrote in her letter, revealed by Der Spiegel magazine, citing a “constantly worsening already tense situation” in municipalities and communities on the issue of housing immigrants. “Immigration services are increasingly reaching the limits of what they can afford in terms of reception, accommodation and care”, says the minister, who even warns of the risk of “overburdening the solidarity of society”.

Threats to public safety and order must be prevented, Ms Fezer continued, referring to Islamist terrorism and recent incidents of “knife attacks and other violent crimes by refugees, which have led to a dramatic deterioration in society’s sense of security and inner peace ». The Home Secretary also expresses concern about the “increasing dysfunctionality” of the Dublin Process.
