When Katy Perry announced not so long ago that she would be releasing a new album, it didn’t take long for the lead single “WOMAN’S WORLD” to make a bit of rounds on the internet. It was quickly speculated that it wasn’t real and that the leak was made with AI because it sounded so bad, but nothing could be further from the truth. Katy Perry doesn’t need AI to make bad music and the fact that she made the song with the controversial Dr. Luke didn’t help the song to sink into better ground. “LIFETIMES” followed the song and was slightly better, but still not good. So far, Perry has not succeeded in creating a hype for 143which will be released next week.
Earlier this week, the singer performed at the Video Music Awards and received multiple VMAs herself. She received the Video Vanguard Award and also won the award for best VMA performance ever. The second one was particularly striking, because on social media the question arose whether there were people who felt that way. “Roar” performance uit 2013 could remember. How could Perry win that prize above Beyoncé’s “Love on Top” announcing her pregnancy, Lady Gaga Bleeding to Death During “Paparazzi” in Madonna getting cozy with Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears? Deserved or not, Perry also performed at the awards show and gave a preview of “I’M HIS, HE’S MINE”, her new single with Doechii.
With a sample of Crystal Waters’ “Gypsy Woman”, Katy Perry immediately grabs our attention, but the sample is used in a cringe-worthy way. The very recognizable tune is spun out in a strangely slowed-down way as a common thread throughout the song, without much build-up or variation in the music. Perry and Doechii alternate smoothly, with Perry also trying his hand at rapping, without us ever getting excited about it. “I’M HIS, HE’S MINE” is uncomfortable to the ear, monotonous and undoubtedly does “Gypsy Woman” an injustice. Too bad the song wasn’t served with pears, because then we would still have enjoyed it.
143 will be released on September 20th, so don’t put it in your agenda.
