What does it take to make a really good adventure film? Fast-paced action, epic images and a good dose of humor are definitely the right ingredients – and our streaming tip today, which revived an entire genre, has them in abundance.
It really cannot be emphasized enough what this film did for an entire genre, and yet it has its origins in a very mundane amusement park attraction. We are of course talking about “pirates of the Caribbean“, which made the pirate film genre socially acceptable again and generally took big, lustfully over-the-top historical adventures to a new level. Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the permanently tipsy Jack Sparrow has become indelibly etched into pop culture, and the film music by Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer is also immediately recognizable by anyone who goes to the cinema at least sporadically.
If you want to remind yourself what makes the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” not only so good, but also so entertaining, and are still looking for a suitable film for your streaming evening: Just take a look (again) at “Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl”, as the film is called in the original. And once you’ve got a taste for rum, er, blood, you can continue streaming:

“Pirates of the Caribbean” has, not surprisingly, made it into our list of the best adventure films of all time and is ranked 17th. Director Gore Verbinski has the foundation for a mega-successful blockbuster franchise that will soon enter its sixth round – but then probably as a reboot, without the original cast, who might only make small guest appearances. So we shouldn’t completely give up hope that Johnny Depp might at least briefly stagger across the screen again as Jack Sparrow.
Based on the amusement park attraction “Pirates Of The Caribbean” in Disneyland, “Pirates of the Caribbean” tells the story of governor’s daughter Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), who stumble into a wild high seas adventure on the pirate ship Black Pearl. In our official FILMSTARTS review, we gave it an excellent 4.5 out of 5 possible stars.
Speaking of Keira Knightley: The actress was not particularly enthusiastic about the turbo start her career got thanks to “Pirates of the Caribbean”. You can find out why she even went into therapy in the following article:
“It was traumatic”: Keira Knightley had to undergo therapy for several years after “Pirates of the Caribbean”
