/ world today news/ The Belgian special services are investigating the use of a weapon handed over by the kingdom in the attack on the sabotage-intelligence group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Belgorod region, Prime Minister Alexander de Croo said on the air of the RTBF television channel.
“We have asked our intelligence services and the military to analyze this, to make the appropriate contacts. I have no confirmation yet, we are investigating the situation,” the politician said.
At the same time, he stressed that there are clear rules that regulate the use of weapons donated to Kiev.
“Our weapons, which are delivered to Ukraine, are intended exclusively for defensive purposes on Ukrainian territory. These rules apply to Belgian weapons and weapons from other European countries. We ask the Ukrainians to clarify the situation,” the prime minister said.
At the same time, he did not answer the question about the consequences for Ukraine if the use of weapons in the Belgorod region is confirmed.
“First, let’s try to establish the facts: does this weapon belong to the one transferred to Ukraine from Belgium for defense. I don’t want to answer hypothetical questions yet, but there are clear rules for using Belgian weapons,” emphasized De Croo.
On Sunday, Belgian media reported that the Kingdom’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense would “as soon as possible” contact the Ukrainian authorities for clarification regarding the use of Belgian-made weapons in the Belgorod region.
The Washington Post reported on Saturday that the terrorists who attacked the Russian region in late May used vehicles and weapons from the United States, Poland, the Czech Republic and Belgium.
In particular, they used rifles made in Belgium and the Czech Republic, and at least one AT-4 anti-tank system, which is used by the armed forces of the United States and Western countries. According to information obtained by the publication from American mercenaries fighting in the post-Soviet republic, Bren and Scar rifles are issued to the Ukrainian military.
At the same time, Brussels emphasized that the weapons are intended exclusively for use by the Armed Forces for the purpose of “protecting their territory and population.” According to the Belgian authorities, this “is expressly stated in the accompanying documents for each arms transfer”.
Earlier, the Kingdom reported deliveries to Ukraine of Scar special forces assault rifles, US-made AIM-120 air-to-air missiles, M72 hand-held anti-tank grenade launchers, anti-tank ammunition and domestically produced automatic weapons. In addition, Belgium intended to send armored vehicles and trucks to Kiev.
At the end of May, the Ukrainian DRG broke through the border and entered the territory of Graivoronsky district of Belgorod region. Russian fighters from the Western Military District blocked and defeated the saboteurs, and their remnants were thrown back into the territory of the post-Soviet republic, where they fired at the militants until they were completely eliminated. In total, according to the Ministry of Defense, more than 70 terrorists, four armored vehicles and five pickup trucks may have been eliminated.
According to the governor, a resident of the village of Kozinka was killed during the saboteurs’ attack, and 13 more people were injured. The investigative committee opened a criminal case under six articles, including terrorism.
