Memphis Depay, Corinthians’ new signing, surprised with some emotional statements during his official presentation at the Brazilian club.
The Dutch striker said it was “God” and his connection to his African roots that prompted him to join the São Paulo team, at a time when the club is facing a sporting crisis.
Depay explained that his decision to leave European football to play in Brazil was guided by a greater purpose, stating: “Some people ask me why I came to Brazil, and I answer: I don’t know, only God knows.”
The 30-year-old, whose father is from Ghana, also highlighted his cultural heritage: “The blood I carry comes from a tribe of warriors in Ghana,” underlining his connection to the largest black population outside Africa, which is in Brazil.
The forward, who has played for clubs such as Lyon, Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid, signed a contract with Corinthians until 2026.
During his presentation at the Neo Química Arena stadium, Depay also received the support of Brazilian star Neymar, who welcomed him through social media, expressing his enthusiasm for the arrival of a player of his level to Brazilian football.
Depay’s arrival comes at a crucial time for Corinthians, who are fighting to escape the relegation zone in the Brasileirao. The player, who has not set a date for his debut, is working to get fit after his participation in the European Championship.
