Three days of national mourning in Peru over Fujimori’s death – Diario La Página – 2024-09-13 09:39:16

The Peruvian government’s supreme decree on three days of national mourning for the death of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was published shortly after midnight yesterday, Wednesday, in the official newspaper El Peruano, and also decides to grant Fujimori “the funeral honors that correspond to the president of the Republic in office.”

During these three days, the national flag will be flown at half-mast in all public buildings, military installations, bases, ships, police stations and other state offices, as well as in diplomatic delegations.

Shortly after Fujimori’s death was announced, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzén said he had contacted the former president’s relatives to coordinate his funeral, in accordance with official protocol.

“We would like to express our condolences to the family, friends and supporters of former President Alberto Fujimori,” Adrianzén said at a press conference.

He immediately stated that “the authorities will contact the family so that, in coordination with them, a decision can be made on their wishes.”

Peruvian state ceremonies state that, upon learning of the death of a former president, the national flag will be flown at half-mast and an official day of mourning will be declared on the day of the burial of the mortal remains.

The transfer of his body to the wake will take place in private, but the funeral will be held with official attendance.

It also states that the funeral procession will be led by the president or her representative and the deceased’s relatives.

The same honors will be paid to the president at the funeral, subject to the issuance of the respective legal instrument.
