A SNOOKER star has won £50,000 at the new Saudi Masters – just months after interviewing to become a bookmaker.
Jimmy Robertson, who was 38, started looking for a new job when the bills piled up and it was difficult for him to earn much money because of an earthquake that “destroyed his career”.

But the 3am alarms were silenced by a lucrative new adventure on the mat in China and now the Middle East, reaching the semi-finals in Saudi Arabia before losing 6- 0 to Mark Williams.
Robertson, world number 38, told the Metro: “I had a lousy season. No income. Of course, I have a wife, kids, mortgage and everything to pay. It is difficult. The bills won’t stop because I’m not winning games.
“So I had two months and I had to make money. I came back from the German Masters and went for a job interview with DPD. It has become so bad.
“It was the last thing I wanted to do, but I wasn’t making any money playing snooker.
“I went to the interview, the money seemed right, but the days were long. I had to be at the warehouse at 5am which meant getting up at 3am and I thought this was not for me! »
“The intention was there, but I thought about it straight away because I still had to train. I didn’t even tell him I was a snooker player.
“An opportunity arose to play in the Heyball Grand Final in March.
“I had money to go, everything was covered and I won several games there and ended up picking up several books.

“That’s as much in one week as I would have earned with DPD in three months!
“I’m the only source of income at home, so there’s a lot of pressure.
“A lot of people are in the same boat as me, I’m not crying with my story here, but it’s difficult sometimes when you’re playing and you feel like you have to win a game for the t -money to pay bills. »
Robertson won his only ranking tournament to date at the European Masters in October 2018, then reached No. 21 in the world next March.
He holds the record for most points scored in a single round after achieving an incredible 178 when Lee Walker was awarded 44 penalty points at the 2021 Scottish Open.
But after a strong campaign in 2021-22, his career was in danger of collapsing when his tremors completely took over and got out of control.
Robertson said: “The best way to describe it, when it’s at its worst, it’s like you’ve had a rough night and you haven’t slept, you wake up and shake, yes you are a bit bad.

“Or you did a heavy weight training session at the gym and your arms are gone. Playing snooker with shaking arms, moving all over the place, it’s awesome.
“I had no confidence in myself even though I struggled with it. It’s a pain to go through this, all these feelings related to leaving home, lack of confidence, loss, not earning money.
“It’s not fun. I love competing in competitions, I still love what I do, but the feelings have been hurt. I haven’t felt so good in so long.
“I’ve had tremors for years, maybe 15 years ago my arms were shaking, my head and neck were shaking.
“So I went to the doctor and they told me it might be dystonia. The dystonia gradually disappeared, but my arms were never 100% functional for several years.
“Over the last three or four years I have really controlled my arms. It worsened to the point of ruining my snooker career.
“So I went to see a neurologist. It’s essential tremor, I was told it wouldn’t get better and we couldn’t get rid of it. »
Now, Robertson has regained confidence with recent victories over four-time world champion John Higgins and reigning Crucible king Kyren Wilson in Riyadh – as well as a nice boost to his bank account.
