New season of ‘Of Je Worst Lust’ kicks off with sustainability, farmers and consumers

The podcast ‘Of je Worst Lust’, in which all kinds of facets of meat consumption are discussed, started a new season on September 3. In that first episode, editor-in-chief Esther de Snoo of Nieuwe Oogst and Paulien van der Geest of Milieu Centraal talk about sustainability, the farmer and the consumer.

In the podcast series ‘Of Je Worst Lust’, facts and fables about eating meat and its production are examined in the form of a discussion. Led by podcast maker Joost Scholten, De Snoo and Van der Geest enter into a discussion with each other in the first episode of the second season, based on five statements.

One of the questions they address: ‘Isn’t shrinking the livestock population to protect nature necessary if Dutch livestock farmers continue to make their livestock more sustainable with innovations?’ They also discuss statements about policy in relation to sustainability investments, shrinking the livestock population in relation to income and export, and the development of quality marks and a fair price that also includes social costs.

The podcast concludes with the proposition that there should be a quality mark ‘from Dutch soil’ so that consumers know that this meat meets the highest requirements in terms of sustainability and animal friendliness. Van der Geest speaks of a hollow logo. ‘There are so many different types of agriculture, you can’t lump them all together.’ De Snoo: ‘I agree with that and am against a proliferation of quality marks that makes it impossible for consumers to see the forest for the trees.’
