Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris faced each other in the ABC News election debate the night before Wednesday, Finnish time.
In the argument, something happened that according to the rules was not supposed to be possible.
Harris managed to speak over Trump’s speech.
The parties had agreed in advance that the microphones would be kept closed during the other party’s speech, so that talking over the top was not possible.
“Come on”
Naturally, the presidential candidates could not control their microphones themselves. The organizer of the debate might have made a mistake during the heated argument.
It’s also possible that the organizer allowed Trump to ask Harris a question.
– You should ask if he would allow an abortion in the eighth, ninth, seventh month, Trump insisted to the presenters.
– Don’t bother, Harris answered.
After that, the exchange of words turned into talking.
Torsion from mute
A similar muting rule was used in the debate between Trump and President Joe Biden, who withdrew from the race, in June.
Muting the microphones happened at the request of the Biden campaign.
The Harris and Trump campaigns balked at being muted ahead of Wednesday’s debate. While Democrats had hoped for a mute in June, this time they would have preferred open mics.
Harris’s campaign was apparently afraid that Trump would appear calmer and more stable when he didn’t get to shout in-between comments.
Harris also tried to talk over Trump later during the debate.
Trump responded with a firm acknowledgment.
– Wait a minute, I’ll speak now, if you allow. Sound familiar? Trump scowled.
