The Tompir is now also on the move at Mainz primary schools. The blood donation vampire is played by Tom Lehel – the presenter and children’s television star. Yesterday at the Goethe primary school he explained to children with a lot of humor how blood is donated and what happens to the donated blood in the laboratory. Tom Lehel was very pleased with the children’s curiosity and interest. The kids there asked very logical and great questions.
Tom Lehel is part of a campaign by the German Red Cross Blood Donation Service West. The school project was launched specifically for fourth graders. The aim is to show children at an early age how important blood donations are. The school project is designed to be age-appropriate. As part of the campaign, a film was made to sensitize children to the topic with funny but informative content. The film can also be used as teaching material.
The reason for the campaign is the lack of blood donations. According to the German Red Cross, only half as many people are donating blood as usual. This means that some operations that are not essential have to be postponed. The German Red Cross blood donation service needs around 3,500 blood donations every day to refill the stocks. You can find a link to the possible blood donation dates here.
