Former fashion mogul Peter Nygaard was sentenced Monday by a Toronto court to 11 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting four women.
“Peter Nygard is a sexual predator,” said Superior Court Judge Robert Goldstein, commenting that he “used his wealth and power to commit four sexual assaults.”
The prosecutor had asked for a sentence of at least 15 years in prison for the Canadian-Finnish former businessman. Nygaard, who is 83 today, has remained incarcerated since 2020, when he was arrested. His lawyers appealed for a 6-year sentence, citing his advanced age and poor health.
In his reasoning, the judge highlighted the “violence and humiliation” but also the “deceptions” used by Nygaard to lead his victims to his apartment.
The announcement of the sentence came nearly a year after a court found him guilty of sexually abusing several women and a minor (aged 16) between 1988-2005. He himself declared himself innocent. Over several weeks, his victims testified that they were “trapped” by Nygard and found themselves in a room where there was a bed and a bar, but the door had no handle and opened with a code.
The trial in Ontario Superior Court was the first of a series of others awaiting Nygard, the former Hollywood “fashion guru” who traveled on his private plane – with his name emblazoned in gold letters – and organized lavish parties at his mansions in Los Angeles and the Bahamas.
