British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who was aboard the luxury yacht Bayesian, which sank off Palermo, died of suffocation, Reuters reported, citing initial tests carried out on Saturday after his body was recovered.
Initial results on the body of his daughter Hannah Lynch, whose tests were also carried out on Saturday, were inconclusive, a source told Reuters. Injuries have been ruled out as the cause of death and it is more likely that she either died of suffocation or drowning.
Preliminary results of autopsies on four other victims — Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith, attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife Nedda — pointed to asphyxiation as the likely cause of death, judicial sources said earlier this week.
Fifteen people survived, including the wife of Leeds, whose company owned the Bayesian, and the yacht’s captain. Further forensic tests have been ordered on all the victims, with results expected in the coming weeks, the source said.
Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, the ship’s cook and four guests died when the British-flagged superyacht sank during severe and sudden weather off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, on August 19.
The bodies of the dead, apart from the cook, were found in cabins on the port side of the 56-metre ship as they gasped for air, the head of the Palermo Fire Department said last month.
