Shocking revelation (in a documentary): Patty Scialfa, Springsteen’s wife, has myeloma

There is a previously secret drama in the world of Bruce Springsteen: Patti Scialfa, the Boss’s wife, has been suffering for several years from multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that still has no definitive cure.
Patti was diagnosed in 2018 and spoke about it in the documentary: Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which premiered yesterday at the Toronto International Film Festival. In the film, which shines a spotlight on the rock legend and his closest entourage from behind the scenes, Scialfa reveals that the disease has made it difficult for her to go on stage and, as a result, to participate in Bruce’s tours: “It affects the immune system and so I have to be careful about what I choose to do and where I choose to go. Every now and then I go to a concert and sing a couple of songs on stage: this has been a gift to me. It’s my new ‘new normal’ and I’m at peace with it,” the singer says in the documentary that will be released on October 25 on Hulu and Disney Plus.
Patti Scialfa, 71, did not attend the premiere in Toronto, where her husband and director Thom Zimny did instead: the singer has been part of the E Street Band since 1984 (she joined on the eve of the Born in the USA tour) and married Springsteen in 1991. The couple, who have three children, recently welcomed their first grandchild.
In Road Diary, Patti explains to fans that singing on stage with her husband has shown the public “a side of our relationship that you don’t usually see.” The myeloma, which affects white blood cells, was reportedly discovered in its early stages during the opening bars of Springsteen on Broadway. It has not been specified whether the singer is still undergoing treatment or whether the disease has gone into remission.
The announcement, on the other hand, amplified a theme that Springsteen has been dealing with in recent years and especially in his latest world tour in which the Boss has not held back, giving his all: mortality comes even for rock stars.
The Boss, who is 74, has also had health problems recently: a year ago he suspended his tour from September to December after discovering he was suffering from an ulcer, while this year he postponed some dates “on doctors’ orders” because he continues to have “problems with his vocal cords”. Nonetheless, Bruce assured the audience at the Toronto festival that he has no intention of retiring: “I’ll keep singing until the wheels fall off”.
