Blood donations increase by almost 15 percent

Blood donations have increased in this province during the summer months by 14.54 percent, according to the report made by the Hemotherapy and Hemodonation Center of Castilla y León (Chemcyl). Thus, during the months of July and August, the people of Avila have made 890 blood donations, of which 493 were made in July and 397 in August. A year earlier, in the same period, 777 donations were registered in this province. The increase in donations by the people of Avila during the months of July and August has been greater than that registered in the region as a whole, taking into account that in the same summer period blood donations have increased by 12.41 percent, with a cumulative total of 17,270 solidarity gestures of this type in the months of July and August, compared to the 15,363 registered in the same period in 2023.

Ávila is the fourth province in the region where blood donations have increased the most this summer, behind Soria, with an increase of 55.44 percent and 771 donations in total; Zamora, 28.97 percent more, up to 917; and Valladolid, 17.98 percent and 4,581 donations in total in those two months.

In absolute figures, our province is eighth in number of donations, with Soria behind, with 771 blood donations in total in those two months.

Given these excellent figures, Chemcyl would like to thank all the donors who have shown their solidarity following the calls generated throughout the summer due to the need for blood components for daily work in the hospitals of Castilla y León.

So far this year, 3,644 blood donations have been recorded in Ávila, which, according to Alejandro Reviriego, president of the Brotherhood of Blood Donors of Ávila, is the same figure as a year ago. For the head of the Brotherhood, the fact that donations are increasing, in this case in summer, “is always positive” taking into account that 450 bags of blood are needed every day in Castilla y León.

Despite the good response that the people of Avila always give, Reviriego insists once again on the need for young people to become aware and involved in the need to become blood donors. “We try by all means, both in Avila and in Castile and Leon, to ensure that we go little by little but always forward,” says Reviriego to highlight each and every donation that is made, taking into account that nine out of ten people at some point in our lives will need a blood transfusion.

All information regarding where, when and how to donate can be found on the website of the Hemotherapy Centre of Castilla y León and on its social networks, including mobile donation points established specifically in each province.
