Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka has won her first US Open title to celebrate her third career Grand Slam title and is now on track to top the world rankings.
Sabalenka achieved glory on the Arthur Ashe court in Flushing Meadows in front of more than 23,000 people by easily defeating American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5.
The title confirms the Belarusian’s rise in the past two years, after having won the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024. Now, the US Open title meant revenge in her career.
Sabalenka came close to winning the title last year when she lost to American Coco Gauff in 2023. But with the then champion’s defeat in the round of 16 of this year’s tournament, the door was opened for Aryna to now take the title.
“I have often thought that I was so close to winning, it has been a dream and now to get this precious trophy is very important for me. I understand Jessica, how difficult it is to lose, but I am sure that one day you will lift this scepter. It has been a spectacular summer for me,” said Sabalenka proudly as she received the crown from the hands of the iconic Billie Jean King.
In a less adverse atmosphere than last year, the Belarusian showed that she had learned her lesson and controlled her emotions even after wasting four points to take the first set.
She prevailed in two fierce sets, full of twists and turns, until collapsing on the court in tears to celebrate her third Grand Slam crown.
