Imagine the fans’ shock. Tyreek Hill, the NFL sprinter, one of the best receivers in the game, lying on the ground on the way to the stadium with his arms behind his back and his wrists cuffed. Literally surrounded by police officers.
His sports car on the side of the road, doors wide open, and the Miami Dolphins player immobilized. A scene that did not escape many drivers heading to the Dolphins’ season-opening game against Jacksonville, the Florida derby, in short.
Officially, the handcuffs were put on for speeding and a subsequent altercation with the officers. He, in the post-match, admits only the first part and accuses: “I don’t know what would have happened to me if I hadn’t been Tyreek Hill”, referring to the many episodes of excessive violence by the police against the African-American community. The player claimed he was “handcuffed” for no reason. “I didn’t disrespect the officers”, he added. A case, no doubt. Which led to the sudden suspension of a police officer present at the time of the events.
The officer’s identity has not been released. Miami-Dade Police Chief Stephanie V. Daniels said she immediately launched an internal investigation.
After the game, Hill, informed that the officer had been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation, said: “That should tell you everything you need to know.”
Defensive tackle Calais Campbell was also briefly handcuffed for intervening in defense of his teammate during those tense moments.
Going into the game, the Dolphins struggled, especially in the first half, to get the better of the Jaguars. And it took all of Hill’s talent to turn it around.
Sanders kicked a 52-yard field goal as time expired to seal the win. Tua Tagovailoa threw for 336 yards and a touchdown and led Miami on an eight-play, 31-yard drive over the final 2:09.
Tyreek Hill started the comeback with an 80-yard touchdown reception that sparked Miami’s previously sluggish offense in the third quarter and gave the Dolphins a 17-14 lead.
After the touchdown, Hill put his hands behind his back as if to simulate being handcuffed, a reminder that he had been held face down and arrested by Miami-Dade officers after being stopped for a traffic violation near Hard Rock Stadium.
Hill finished with seven receptions for 130 yards. But his case is not closed and he is destined to remain a hot topic.
