Steelers: Russell Wilson out for first game of season due to injury

Russell Wilson has a calf injury and will not be with the Pittsburgh Steelers as they face the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season

Justin Fields will be a starter as a field marshal with Pittsburgh Steelersgiven that Russell Wilson was left out of the first match against the Atlanta Falcons due to a calf injury.

Wilson, who was limited in practices Thursday and Friday after aggravating his injury in training camp, will be the team’s emergency quarterback. Steelersmeaning he will only be able to play if there are injuries to Fields and Kyle Allen, who will be a substitute on Sunday.

Wilson took the field and made a series of throws for about 15 minutes with a couple of assistants from the Steelers.

Wilson He appeared to move slowly during warmups, as he made several small dropbacks before firing a pass. He warmed up in each end zone, finishing with fades to the corner.

Wilson then returned to the field and briefly spoke with general manager Omar Khan. Wilson resumed his pitches, this time to quarterbacks coach Tom Arth.

Fields warmed up nearby, tossing the ball around with tight end Connor Heyward and wide receiver Calvin Austin III. Wilson, however, still moved minimally during warmups as Fields ran through drills.

Both Wilson and Fields threw passes to wide receivers as they lined up for air routes during warmups, but Fields did the first few reps of the drill each time, followed by Allen and then Wilson.

Fields started 38 games in his three years with the Chicago Bears before being exchanged for the Steelers for a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick in the offseason. The sixth-round pick becomes a fourth if Fields plays more than 50 percent of the snaps in the 2024 season.
