For former Bayern assistant coach Hermann Gerland, Thomas Müller is on the same level as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Munich – Thomas Müller is not only one of FC Bayern’s greatest players, but also one of the best German footballers of all time. As a two-time Champions League winner, twelve-time German champion and 2014 world champion, he is already a legend. Last weekend, the 34-year-old made himself the sole record player for FC Bayern with his 710th competitive appearance, replacing Sepp Maier. Now his former coach Hermann Gerland has spoken out about Müller and praised him highly.
Gerland, who coached Müller in the youth team of the record champions and has accompanied him for many years, explained in an interview with fcbayern.comwhat makes the 34-year-old so special as a player: “Thomas has a gift: the right nose, on and off the pitch. An unimaginably clever guy, a gift for every team, for every club.”

Müller has already made a lasting impression in top international football: “Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo play spectacularly. Thomas Müller plays unspectacularly – unspectacular, but unbelievably well! He has not only been a follower in world football for almost two decades, but a player like no other,” said the long-time talent promoter of the FC Bayern further.
Gerland: “Without Müller, something is missing”
According to the 70-year-old, Müller is an absolute instinctive footballer whose abilities are difficult to describe: “When Thomas Müller is not there, something is missing. It has always been like that. Intuition – that’s what it is: a unique feeling for the situation. You can’t explain it, you can’t learn it. He is never tangible on the pitch, and he always knows exactly what to do off it too.”

“Nobody could have predicted this career, but Thomas Müller has absolutely earned his place in the history of FC Bayern and in the entire history of football, alongside all the Munich greats like Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller. Thomas Müller represents the modern era of FC Bayern,” continued Gerland, who is also known as Tiger.
An enormous ambition is also responsible for Müller’s continued success to this day. According to Gerland, the 2014 world champion was always motivated for every training session and game, even as a youth: “Others would hang their heads for minutes after a bad pass – Thomas would say to me when he had a bad game: ‘Tiger, I’ll perform at my best again next time!'”
