With several festival nominations, including representing Mexico at the Oscars, the film Totem won the Ariel for Best Film this Saturday.

The feature film, directed by Lila Avilés, was released on the Netflix platform in March.
“Totem” won five awards, including Best Film and Best Director. It competed at the Spirits Awards, alongside titles such as “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest”, as well as the 2023 Berlin Film Festival, where it received the Ecumenical Jury Prize.
What is Totem about?
The film talks about the daily life of Mexicans, about childhood, family and home. It is a story that focuses on a seven-year-old girl who helps prepare a surprise party for her sick father.
Throughout the story, several plots of different family members are intertwined to gain an in-depth understanding of family dynamics.
Amidst the pre-celebration excitement, problems surface, but so does the love that keeps the family together.
