Roma,. Access to the Trevi Fountain, one of the main attractions for the millions of tourists who visit the Italian capital every year, could be limited in the near future if a municipal initiative goes ahead, a report said today.
A note published in the Corriere della Sera newspaper and other media outlets quotes statements by Alessandro Onorato, advisor for Tourism, Major Events and Sport at the Rome City Hall, who said that the capital’s authorities are seeking to curb the excess of visitors who overcrowd and damage this iconic place in the city.
“I am in favour of studying a new form of access, limited and with a specific timetable, to the Trevi Fountain,” said the official, who specified that, if the measure is applied, a reservation system will be established for entry, free for residents of this city, and at the cost of one euro for tourists. The 18th-century fountain, an exponent of the city’s history, will be a must for tourists.
Late Baroque, it was built between 1732 and 1762 by the architects Nicola Salvi and Giuseppe Panini, and its highlights include the colossal statues of Oceanus, Abundance and Health, sculpted by Pietro Bracci and Filippo della Valle.
Previously, from 5 July 2023, a five-euro entrance fee was introduced to the Pantheon of Agrippa, one of the most visited monuments in Italy, funds that are largely used to cover the renovation and maintenance of the building, according to sources from the Ministry of Culture.
However, in the case of the Trevi Fountain initiative, economic reasons are secondary, as the main aim is to reduce the crowds that affect this important capital monument and promote sustainable tourism, Onorato said.
