EC Red Bull Salzburg won the second home game of the Champions Hockey League against SønderjyskE Vojens 6:2, celebrating their first win of the season in the premier class. The Red Bulls were the dominant team for long stretches and deservedly won the duel against the Danish champions. Andrew Rowe was delighted with a brace. The Red Bulls will now continue the CHL Regular Season next week in Poland against Unia Oświęcim and the ZSC Lions.
You can’t start a game any better. After exactly 58 seconds, Andrew Rowe took aim in front of the Danish goal and put the puck in the net with his first goal for the Red Bulls, giving them an early lead. The Red Bulls (again without Florian Baltram and Philipp Wimmer) remained the dominant team, but despite a few good opportunities, they were unable to get past goalkeeper Mattias Pettersson a second time. Mario Huber was also unable to put the puck in the net after a solo shorthanded effort (13th minute). The guests had their best phases in power play, but were rarely dangerous. Salzburg goalkeeper David Kickert was on hand to capitalize on the guests’ good chances and secured the 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
At the start of the second period, Salzburg used their chances very efficiently and scored three times in the power play within just over two minutes. Dennis Robertson (21st minute), Andrew Rowe, who scored a brace (22nd minute) and Peter Schneider (23rd minute) ensured a comfortable 4-0 lead. The Danes then had a strong phase, but were repeatedly thwarted by David Kickert. Salzburg stayed in the game and Mario Huber converted a beautiful pass from Nash Nienhuis with a one-timer that hit the post to make it 5-0 (35th minute). Vojens was now playing on equal terms with the Red Bulls, so that both teams had good chances in the fast final phase. However, the home team took the five-goal lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes.
In the final third, the guests initially reduced the deficit to 1:5 after a goal by Nikolaj Krag Christensen (42nd minute). But the Red Bulls had the answer, Lucas Thaler shot from a distance without hesitation and put the puck under the crossbar in a spectacular fashion (46th minute). The game remained fast and balanced until the end and the Red Bulls hardly let anything go wrong. Only in the final minute did the Danes reduce the deficit again in the power play, which meant that the Red Bulls still won the duel against the Danish champions clearly with 6:2.
Statement Andrew Rowe: “We had good energy and were on fire from the start. We wanted to get a lot of pucks in front of the goal and we did that well over the course of the game. The Danes also had some good quality chances in between, but overall we felt really good and wanted to take the momentum with us.”
