On this date, we turn the hands back – 2024-09-08 20:27:36

When does Bulgaria return to astronomical time, also called winter time?

This fall, we’ll move our clocks back one hour on October 27th. This should be done at 04.00 hours after midnight. In fact, this is common astronomical time, while daylight saving time is extraordinary.

In September 2018, the European Commission came up with a proposal to move the hands for the last time, with the various countries choosing by March whether they want to stay on astronomical time (winter) or summer time. However, the end of the time change has been postponed for now.

The change of time between winter and summer time is according to Decree No. 94 of March 13, 1997 of the Council of Ministers. With it, every year on the night before the last Sunday in October, summer time is introduced to switch to winter time, and on the last Sunday in March – to summer time.

The idea of changing the weather first came to Benjamin Franklin. He wrote a letter to the editor of the Paris Journal newspaper in 1784, suggesting that Parisians rise and go to bed earlier. In practice, the idea was implemented by the German government during the First World War in the period 30 April to 1 October 1916. Great Britain was the second country to initially introduce daylight saving time from 21 May to 1 October 1916.
