HAJI DIMITAR
He is alive, he is alive! There in the Balkans,
covered in blood he lies moaning
a hero with a deep chest wound,
a hero in youth and manly strength.
To one side threw a rifle,
for each other a two-pointed saber;
eyes darken, head sways,
mouth curses the whole universe!
The hero lies, and in the sky
the sun ceases to burn angrily;
a reaper sings somewhere in the field,
and the blood flows even stronger!
Harvest is now… Sing, robins,
these sad songs! Gray and you, sun,
in this slave land! He will perish
and this hero… But shut up, heart!
He who falls fighting for freedom,
he does not die: he is pitied
earth and sky, beast and nature
and singers sing songs about him…
By day an eagle guards his shadow,
and a wolf meekly licks his wound;
above it a falcon, a youth bird,
and she cares for a brother, for a hero!
The evening came – the moon rose,
stars shower the firmament;
forest roared, wind blew, –
The Balkans are singing a bad song!
And self-wild in a white disguise,
wondrous, wonderful, sing a song, –
they quietly step on green grass
and they come to the hero and sit down.
One of his wounds binds with herbs,
another splashes him with cold water,
rubs a kiss on his mouth faster, –
and he looks at her, – dear, Zesma!
“Tell me, sister, where is Karajata?
Where is my faithful companion?
Tell me, take my soul, –
I want to die here, sister!”
And they clap their hands and hug each other,
and with songs they soar to the heavens, –
they fly and sing, until dawn,
and seek the spirit of the Karaja…
But it’s already dark! And in the Balkans
the hero lies, his blood flows, –
the wolf licks his sore wound,
and the sun is still shining – it is shining!
