Paralympic Games: Gold from stunning Stamatopoulou – 2024-09-07 20:25:57

The third gold medal in the Paralympic Games was given to Greece by the swimmer Alexandra Stamatopoulou. The 38-year-old athlete won the 50m backstroke final with a performance of 50.12 and burst into tears of joy in the pool of La Défense in Paris. Germany’s Bether was second with 51.40.

Stamatopoulou, who won a bronze medal in Tokyo, suffers from Stiff Person Syndrome and uses a wheelchair. In the following link you can read her touching story, as she told it to Nikos Papadogiannis at Documento in December 2020.

“I’ve fought a lot, I’ve been through so many misfortunes, but I have a soul,” said the Paralympic gold medalist crying into the microphone of ERT. “It’s incredible, the national anthem will be heard for me, it’s incredible what I’m living. They said a lot, I went through so many setbacks and I told everyone, quiet. In the end I will give what I have to give…”

Alexandra Stamatopoulou is celebrating her 38th birthday today in Paris. The Paralympic Games conclude in Paris on Sunday night. Greece celebrated a total of 12 medals.
