Corinthians have reached an agreement to sign Dutch striker Memphis Depay, who will sign a contract with the Brazilian club until the end of 2026 if there are no last-minute problems, GloboEsporte reported. The transfer, which will involve around 70 million reals (more than 12 million dollars) in salaries, bonuses and image rights, will make the 30-year-old footballer the team’s most impressive signing for the 2024 season.

The former Atlético Madrid player gave the verbal OK to the offer after evaluating several proposals, including one from a Spanish club. He finally opted for the sporting and marketing project presented by Timão. The forward will arrive in São Paulo in the next few days to undergo the corresponding medical examinations and finalise the contractual details, something that is still a key bureaucratic step in order to finally close the contract.

Depay’s contract will include a monthly salary of around 3 million reais (more than 500 thousand dollars), plus bonuses and image rights, according to the UOL website. The agreement was led by Corinthians’ CEO, Fabinho Soldado, along with the general secretary, Vinicius Cascone, and the financial director, Pedro Silveira.

The Brazilian team is led by Argentine coach Ramón Díaz, who arrived last July as a replacement for the fired Antonio Oliveira. The most striking thing is that they are currently in the relegation zone of the Brasileirao, with 13 rounds still to go. Timão is only above Goianiense (18), Cuiaba (22) and Vitoria (22) with their 25 points, three points away from leaving the red zone if they beat Fluminense (27) or Gremio (27).

Meanwhile, they will face the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana against Fortaleza between Tuesday, September 17 and the 24th of the same month. If they advance, they will face the winner of Racing Club de Avellaneda or Athletico Paranaense in the semi-finals. The other important focus is the Copa de Brasil, which will have them playing the second leg of the quarter-finals in the next few days after drawing 1-1 in the first leg with Juventude.

With this scenario in mind, Timão is looking to speed up the process because they have time to register their new signing until September 9 for the Copa do Brasil, September 13 for the Sudamericana and September 20 for the Brasileirao.

Memphis emerged from PSV Eindhoven in his country, then went on to play for some of the main European powers such as Manchester United in England or Barcelona and Atlético Madrid in Spain, beyond the fact that some of the main pearls of his potential were seen in his fruitful stage at Olympique Lyon in France. The man who played the 2014 and 2022 World Cups with the Netherlands national team played his last official match on July 10 when he started in the 2-1 defeat to England in the semi-finals of the European Championship.

If no last-minute complications arise, the attacker was released by Diego Cholo Simeone at the Colchonero and will be the 19th signing for Corinthians in 2024 after the arrival of names such as the Argentine Rodrigo Garro. The media outlet O’Globo warns that he will arrive in the country over the weekend to polish the contract that he will make for 28 months.
