In this 2024 season, the Yankees’ Jason Domínguez was expected to have opportunities on the big team. But, The Dominican didn’t manage more than four at-bats throughout the campaign.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman explained in a recent interview for MLB Network the reasons why the young player, who is emerging as the number 16 prospect in all of the Major Leagues, did not get the opportunities expected in the team. Great Yankees.
“Jason is doing everything he needs to do right now.”Cashman began. And the 21-year-old Dominican is hitting .282 with five home runs, 21 RBI and four doubles in 33 games at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre.
However, there is a huge disadvantage that has the first and last name for Domínguez. And it’s Alex Verdugo, as Cashman explained that the Mexican outfielder has been playing better in recent games and would prefer to keep him in left field.
“Verdugo has been playing better basketball lately and the assessments we have with the coaching staff, the player development team and the management focus on the following: ‘What gives us the best chances of winning games?’ and right now Verdugo brings that to the team,” the Bombers manager explained.

Verdugo had a bad slump after the All-Star Game and Yankees management knew how to recognize it. “Obviously, there was a long period where he wasn’t performing to the best of his ability, but he has looked better recently.“, said Cashman.
However, despite this poor performance by Verdugo, Domínguez could not get his chance with the Yankees. Even Aaron Boone and his team chose to pick up Duke Ellisspeedster outfielder who was claimed by the Mariners on August 27.
On the other hand, Cashman indicated that the Yankees do not want to promote Domínguez if you can’t offer daily play time. With Verdugo, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto in the outfield and Giancarlo Stanton as a designated hitter, the manager does not see opportunities for Domínguez to play often in the team.
“If he comes, he has to play. He is not going to sit up and sit still. For that we are coming up [Ellis] now with the club, and then with the club [Jon] Berti. But at the end of everything, if (Domínguez) goes up, he has to play“, Cashman’s sentence.
