ALPHEN AAN DEN RIJN – Diede de Groot failed to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games. The wheelchair tennis player from the Alphen tennis club Nieuwe Sloot lost in the final of the singles to Kamiji Yui from Japan.

After a bad start, De Groot eventually won the first set with 6-4. In the second set, the Japanese came into the match a bit better and won that set with 3-6.

This meant that a decisive third set had to be played. Here De Groot, the number one in the world, could not recover and lost the decisive set 4-6. As a result, she is condemned to a silver medal.

For the first time no Dutch gold in the singles

This defeat means that for the first time since the introduction of the Paralympic Games in 1992, the gold in the singles has not gone to a Dutch woman.

Yesterday, De Groot also lost a final. Together with her playing partner Aniek van Koot, she lost in the final of the doubles to the Japanese duo Kamiji Yui and Manami Tanaka.
