Fun facts about the US presidential campaign this week

Donald Trump comparing a mosquito to politicians, Kamala Harris washing her vegetables in a bathtub and her record as a McDonald’s employee called into question.

Here are some of the most unusual moments from this week’s US presidential campaign:

– Picking back –

Mosquitoes and politicians don’t have much in common, but former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump managed to make the unlikely link when one of the insects pestered him at a town hall event in Pennsylvania on Wednesday.

“We don’t like those mosquitoes flying around,” Trump said. “We don’t want anything to do with them… and we don’t want anything to do with bad politicians who hate our country.”

– Harris y McDonald’s –

McDonald’s became an unlikely topic of discussion this week when Trump’s team demanded proof that his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, worked at the popular fast-food chain while in college.

The candidate’s aides have said she held a job operating French fry and ice cream machines at a branch in California, according to reports.

But Trump spokesman Steven Cheung called for evidence. “Why don’t they provide actual documentation and evidence?” he told The Daily Beast.

– Melania’s book –

Trump’s wife Melania announced her new memoir this week, with a signed collector’s edition printed on “premium” paper that costs $150, although a standard hardcover version is around $30 on Amazon.

Melania introduced the book in a black-and-white video shared on social media, titled “My story. My perspective. The truth.” It will be published in October.

– Kitchen Matters –

Harris brought up her culinary experience, recounting how she once had to wash vegetables in a bathtub before a friend’s Christmas Eve party.

“And I’m not lying to you, I was going to prepare so many vegetables that I had to do it in the bathtub. I’m telling you the truth,” the vice president said in a video posted over the weekend.

– Awkward greeting –

Awkward moments resulting from clumsy greetings are common.

But Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, became the subject of ridicule when a video of a union protest in Ohio last year went viral, showing a woman extending her fist to shake his hand and him instead of giving her a high five.

Still struggling to shake off the “weird” label pinned on him by Democrats, Vance and his apparent lack of social skills were the subject of jokes this week by host Stephen Colbert, who played that and other recordings of the senator on the satirical program “The Late Show.”
