National advisors of Morena in Tabasco are promoting the candidacy of Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, one of the sons of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, for the leadership of Morena.
The intention of the Morena supporters is for the son of the federal President to present himself as a running mate for the Secretary of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde, who is emerging as a unity candidate for the national presidency of the official party.
Joaquín Baños, leader of Morena in Tabasco and political operator of the elected Governor of the entity, Javier May, announced that Andrés López Beltrán, known as Andy, will be proposed as a candidate for General Secretary of the party founded by his father.
“We are going with the slogan that as Tabasco residents we are going to support another Tabasco resident, and what better than the son of our current President of the Republic, and also Luisa María Alcalde, a young woman from the left who, by her own merit, will be at the head of Morena for the next three years,” Baños said in statements to Tabasco media.
Morena’s national advisor from Tabasco, Raúl Ojeda, agreed that López Beltrán fits the profile for the position.
“I don’t think it’s a bad suggestion. Andy is a person who has always worked hard. Forgive the expression ‘livestock farmer’, but he was born into the transformation model with his family.
“Since Rocío and always, Andrés has been inclined to take his children to social reading; the profile brings him together, and whatever the people decide,” said Ojeda.
Andrés López Beltrán is the second son of López Obrador and his late wife Rocío Beltrán; he is 38 years old and is considered an internal operator, both in Morena and in the federal government.
Although he does not appear publicly, the influence he has had within the party founded by his father and also in the appointment of officials to key positions in the Administration is well known.
The Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI) group has indicated that both Andrés Manuel López Beltrán and his brother Gonzalo have lobbied business friends to obtain contracts for public works such as the Villahermosa boardwalk; in this case they were linked to the builder Alejandro Castro.
They are also linked as friends of partners in the Romedic company with contracts for Petróleos Mexicanos, the extinct INSABI and the governments of Tabasco and Quintana Roo. The main partner is Jorge Amílcar Olán.
Both Gonzalo and Andrés López Beltrán himself have denied any relationship with businessmen who benefited from public works. In a document released on July 23, both denied any involvement.
“Our father entrusted the supervision of said work to Alejandro Castro because he is a talented person, committed to the Fourth Transformation,” they said regarding the construction of the boardwalk.
“We have never recommended any person or company for public works contracts for this project or any other,” they insisted.
