In the FBI’s 2023 investigation after Colt made threats to attack a school on social media, a few months before the murder, his father told authorities during questioning that there were shotguns in their home, but his son did not have unsupervised access to them.
In fact, Colt had maintained that he did not make the threats. The FBI did not follow up as there was not considered probable cause.
“How is it possible to have an assault rifle at home”
The issue of parental responsibility for juvenile crimes has been increasingly prominent in the US recently.
“How is it possible to have an assault rifle in the house, not have it locked up and your child know where it is?”, asked President Joe Biden rhetorically yesterday. “We need to make sure parents who allow their children to have access to guns are held accountable,” he added.
It is recalled that the teenager is accused of four murders – two of his classmates, a 39-year-old male teacher and a 53-year-old female teacher, who taught mathematics – inside the Apalachi High School, in Winder, about 70 kilometers northeast of Atlanta.
The massacre added to the endless gruesome series of similar tragedies that have been recorded for decades in US educational institutions, a phenomenon that has no parallel in any other country in the world.
