The EU plans to make it easier to import GMO foods – 2024-09-06 08:22:48

/ world today news/ The European Union plans to simplify the process for approving the import of genetically modified food products and animal feed, allowing member states to decide for themselves whether to accept them or not.

This was reported by a source of the AFP agency, according to whom the European Commission will present the proposal on April 22.

The plan is similar to one adopted by the European Parliament in January after years of debate, which allows EU countries to decide for themselves whether to cultivate genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Such a decision means that countries like Spain that want GMOs will no longer face opposition from countries like France that are against it.

Five environmental groups, including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, criticized the EU plans.

(EC President Jean-Claude) Juncker promised to reform European decisions on GM crops to make them more democratic. Instead, it may turn out that he will approve more GM crops under the banner of free trade, brushing aside the concerns of European citizens and the risks to nature,” said Greenpeace’s EU director Jorgo Riess.

Currently, the cultivation of only one genetically modified organism is permitted in the European Union – the Monsanto GMO MON810 corn variety, which grows in Spain, Portugal and the Czech Republic. /AFP
