Mezzo-soprano Wendy White fell off the stage at the Metropolitan Opera in New York during a performance of Faust by Charles Gounod in late December.
Although she was hospitalized at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, fortunately it was determined that the singer did not suffer serious injuries. The primate briefly lost consciousness but was stabilized in the ambulance after the initial shock. According to the stage crew, during the third act of the opera, Wendy White, who played the role of Martha, was supposed to climb a platform behind René Pape, who entered the role of Mephistopheles. One of the steps on the platform, located about 2.5 meters high, breaks and it is Pape who first learns of the incident. He rushes to the rescue, shouting “Curtain, curtain!”, then the curtain closes. The performance was interrupted for half an hour, and subsequently the mezzo-soprano White was replaced by Theodora Hanslow, who played the role of Martha for the rest of the production. Wendy White is one of the well-known opera singers of the Metropolitan stage. There are 500 performances at the prestigious American Opera House. Her debut was in 1989. in the role of Flora from the opera “La Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi.
