137 years since the Unification of Bulgaria

On September 6, the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia. This year marks the 139th anniversary of the historic event that gave new life to a divided Bulgaria after the Russo-Turkish war.

On this day in 1885, the autonomous region of Eastern Rumelia seceded from the Ottoman Empire. And unites with the Principality of Bulgaria, contrary to the decisions of the Great Powers at the Congress of Berlin.

In 1880 the Bulgarian Secret Central Revolutionary Committee (BTRCC) was created, which was asked to carry out the reunification of the Principality with Eastern Rumelia. In order to coordinate the work with the local population, the “Union” committees are established.

Unification was achieved after popular uprisings in Panagyurishte, Chirpan, Pazardjik, Golyamo Konare and other southern Bulgarian settlements coordinated by the BTRCC.

On September 6, 1885 before 139, the detachments of Chardafon the Great (Prodan Tishkov) and Major Danail Nikolaev entered Plovdiv. The regional governor of Eastern Rumelia, Gavril Krastevich, was arrested. A provisional government headed by Dr. Georgi Stranski was established, which announced the accession of Eastern Rumelia to the Principality of Bulgaria. Two days later, Prince Alexander Battenberg confirmed the annexation of the district with a special manifesto.

Among the most determined defenders of the Unification is Stefan Stambolov, who, in his capacity as Speaker of the National Assembly, puts pressure on Alexander Battenberg to legitimize this political act. It was this composed proclamation with which, on September 8, the monarch recognized the merger of the two Bulgarian territories and declared himself the Prince of Northern and Southern Bulgaria.

The day was declared an official holiday of the country by a decision of the National Assembly of February 18, 1998.
