“I will say in a slightly humorous mood, Passion Week at least lasted a week. Here we are talking about the year of passions now for SYRIZA and for its president, who from the first day was not allowed to open a political path. It is questioned daily and constantly”, underlined Kilkis MP Petros Pappas.
Speaking on the First Program, Petros Pappas underlined that “Stefanos Kasselakis wants to express the order he received from the base of the party, to make a completely different party. Ultimately, saying, meaning the structures and function, not obviously in its basic ideological principles. It was a party that was sick, organizationally sick, financially sick, as evidenced by the facts. So we are finally reaching today’s reality, while a month and a half ago, those of us who arrived and the way we arrived, agreed that we should go to a conference to change things in SYRIZA, what we change, what we jointly decide and the President also presented some ideas he said.
Asked how he explains the internal party developments of the last month, Petros Pappas emphasized that his interpretation is twofold.
“One is that there is a huge personal ambition. There is a huge clash of personal egos who want to occupy the chair of the president thinking that they will understand, really, which chair and what will be left of this party as it goes and secondly, there is a great reaction, a resistance to change, in new which is coming. Because possibly, one, there are some designs by some to create a blurred centre-left with no beginning, middle and end, with idiots and defeated political staff left and right. And, secondly, why might some people fear that this change is wrong, and I don’t know why they are afraid of the new, a radical party should not be afraid of the new, that this change will not include them”, he stressed.
“It is the former president’s right to say whatever he wants”
Regarding the former president of SYRIZA – PS, Alexis Tsipras and the question Petros Pappas received, whether he is connected to these developments, he said that “I see the facts. I know that Alexis Tsipras, five months after Stefanos Kasselakis took over the leadership, made an intervention two hours before the SYRIZA conference, as he should not have, completely untimely, completely wrong.
He added that “I also have a personal objection to the fact that the New Left is re-entering the game, that it was invited to the Alexis Tsipras Institute. I and this is my personal objection and I do not express anyone else with this, I consider that the New Left was wrongly invited, which caused such a significant trauma to the body of SYRIZA and that is where my reference ends in relation to the former president of SYRIZA. I don’t know anything else, but I’m talking about all these executives who were then motivated by the president. Now they may be motivated and obviously I think they have a personal ambition. What Stefanos Kasselakis said is, to Alexis Tsipras, come out and say that these people are speaking on your behalf, because they are leaving hints that they may be speaking on behalf of someone else. You want to say, if you don’t want to, don’t say. It is the former president’s right to say whatever he wants,” he pointed out.
Regarding Pavlos Polakis and whether he has a personal agenda, Petros Pappas commented that “at this moment, what I see is that there are executives both in the 87 and some who have now emerged as candidates for the chair of the president of SYRIZA – PS, as I say again, I don’t know what this will mean in a few months, what this chair will mean and obviously also Pavlos Polakis, who must make it clear to us what he wants. To speak up when the times are so critical, when people are outraged by what is happening in the National Health System, that children are being delayed for surgery. We had a very serious complaint yesterday at Hagia Sophia in Athens that possibly these delays could lead to deaths. There is a complaint from the Ombudsman. At the moment when this unyielding precision exists, at the moment when students cannot find housing, parents cannot buy school supplies for their children and we should be discussing the program of the International Exhibition, not even Pavlos Polakis can speak with riddles and to leave open possibilities of questioning not even by anyone, whether newly elected MEP of the party”.
“In democracy everyone is entitled to put himself before the world’s judgment”
Asked if he was referring to Mr. Faradouris, he said “in democracy, everyone is legitimized to put themselves in the judgment of the world and submit a political proposal. But all this, at least in my own logic and I think that of most SYRIZA voters, does not seem logical when it is not dressed up with a specific and different political proposal”.
Finally, responding to whether Mr. Kasselakis will open the issue of internal party elections, Mr. Pappas noted that the issue should be raised with the Central Committee. “To open an issue and bring back the base voters of SYRIZA, who will pay again, participate in the process, this issue should be raised. Putting it behind shows cowardly politics from those who put it out the window or ask it to take a responsibility. They should raise the issue with the Central Committee, so they should question the president of SYRIZA, since they think he is not suitable and Stefanos Kasselakis should have no doubt that he will immediately respond to this questioning”, he concluded.
