New YorkFrances Tiafoe advanced to the semifinals of the US Open after Grigor Dimitrov’s withdrawal and will face fellow countryman Taylor Fritz for a place in the final of the event.
The tennis player’s victory represents a historic event, as for the first time since 2006, there will be an American finalist in a men’s Grand Slam final in New York.
“It’s going to be the biggest match for Taylor and I, I’m sure we’ll put up a great fight,” Frances said.
The host player was winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 and 4-1 when his Bulgarian opponent left the match due to injury.
“It wasn’t the way I wanted to go but I’m happy to be in my second semi-final here,” he said.
Fritz leads head-to-heads against Tiafoe 6-1. He has won their last six meetings, with his only loss coming in 2016.
Tiafoe, 26, has maintained consistent results at the tournament. In 2022 he reached the semi-finals and last year he reached the quarter-finals.
Dimitrov, who is going through one of the best moments of his career at 33 years old, was on the verge of his second semi-final at the US Open, a stage he reached in 2019.
