Even though he is less than a month away from concluding his term, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that he has not lost faith that in the time he has left “we can do something” to resolve the case of the crimes against the Ayotzinapa students.
In his morning press conference on Monday, the head of the Executive referred to this case —whose crimes occurred between the night of September 26 and the early morning of September 27, 2014 in Iguala, Guerrero—, pointing out that “there are many interests that no longer want the young people to be found.”
However, he said that he has the authority to offer various benefits to those who have information or data that lead, above all, to knowing the whereabouts of the normal school students who are victims of forced disappearance.
“We are rushing, I have a meeting this afternoon, because we want to continue moving forward, especially to find the young people. We are giving priority to everything that involves information to find the young people. It has always been the most important thing,” said the president.
He added: “We are ready, and it is my word and I have the authority to give rewards and help to those who give us information. If they give us information and we find the young people, whoever gives the information will be rewarded, protected and we will recognize them.”
For this reason, the Tabasco native asserted that “I have not lost faith that we can still do something in these days.”
Pardon in Vallarta
On the other hand, he announced that he could pardon Israel Vallarta, who has been in prison for several years accused of kidnapping and was part of the so-called Genaro García Luna setup, along with the French-born citizen, Florence Cassez, and has not yet been sentenced.
“We have completed all the formalities in the Judiciary. What we want is for him to be sentenced so that, in accordance with my powers, we can pardon him. I can do that, as long as there is a sentence.”
For the president, the “greatest injustice” in this matter is that, as in many other cases, the judiciary has not issued a ruling.
“This is another flagrant violation of the Constitution. There is no quick, expeditious justice in our country, hence the need for change.”
He said that during the remainder of his term, the situation in Vallarta will continue to be analyzed, trusting that there will be enough time.
“If not, I am sure that this matter will be resolved, because it is an injustice, it is not possible. What happened to the colleague who was accused of the same thing in the setup, Mrs. Florence Cassez? Well, in one way or another, the intervention of the (former) President of France, (Nicolas) Sarkozy, helped a lot. So, we will continue to look into this matter.”
